2012-turkey in armenia
this roll was first shot by yasin*** in istanbul, and then mailed to yerevan. i decided to ask armenians to express their feelings about turkey through facial expression. some of them needed took their time to think about it first, then give an expression while some of reactions were immediate.
***please note that the publishing of these photos is contingent on permissions granted by co-collaborator yasin.
this is an on-going project.
2011-good king
“history is written by those who conquer.” -a farsi proverb
scans from the farsi translation of “a little history of the world” by ernst hans gombrich. (translated to farsi by ali ramin)
2012-marshrutka
is the most affordable form of public transportation in armenia.
once i was shouted at by a middle-aged woman for my loud voice while speaking farsi with my brother. immediately after that i felt very oppressed as a person because i knew from her reaction that the problem was the language i was speaking not the loudness of my voice, which was not loud at all based on local cultural standards.
later that night i dug into my archives and found quite a few photos that i have taken while being on marshrutkas and i realized that this collective form of public transportation has always been under my attention although i was never aware of it.
2012-violence in daily-life
i think the fact that a group of society gives itself the authority to re-spray the slogans and beliefs of the other in public space is violent.
this is an on-going project.
2008-vernissage
vernissage is was a flee market located in yerevan. in 2011, the authorities decided to displace sellers of second-hand and mostly junk stuff to an area invisible enough. today, the majority of market is selling chinese-made crafts.
2011-unwanted
i never intended to make a double-exposure out of this roll. and now it’s like an unwanted child, you most likely will keep him, right?
